Buying guide

Custom lapel pins, explained

Branded pins are one of the oldest and most durable ways to wear a brand. A good lapel pin lasts for years on a jacket, a lanyard or a backpack, and it says something a printed giveaway cannot: that the wearer belongs to the team, the company or the cause.

The pin type decides the look and the price. Soft enamel pins are the budget-friendly standard. Hard enamel and cloisonné pins are smooth and jewelry-like. Die struck metal pins suit one-color logos and formal programs. Photo etched and printed pins hold fine detail, gradients and photos. Cast pins add real depth, and stock pins ship in a day.

Which pin type to choose

Soft enamel pins are the best value for most branded pins. Hard enamel and cloisonné pins are smooth and polished, for awards and executive gifts. Die struck metal pins suit one-color logos and formal programs. Photo etched pins hold fine lines and small text, and printed pins reproduce gradients and photos. For depth, see 3D cast pins; for something soft and colorful, PVC pins.

Choosing the size

Most lapel pins are 3/4 inch to 1 1/4 inches; 1 inch is the most common. Measure the longest side of your design. Small text needs room: on a 3/4 inch pin, lettering under about 1/16 inch tall can fill in. Choose the size on the product page and the price table changes with it. Larger pins cost more, but the step from 3/4 inch to 1 inch is usually small.

Plating, backs and extras

Metal pins are plated in gold, silver, copper, nickel or an antique finish, and some can be color matched. A butterfly clutch is the standard back; rubber clutches, military clutches, magnets and safety pins are available on many models. An epoxy coating smooths and protects soft enamel, and on several pins it costs nothing extra.

Minimums and timing

Custom pins usually start at 100 to 500 pieces depending on the type, and stock pins from as few as five. A one-time setup and mold charge applies to custom pins, and a reorder with the same artwork is not charged setup again. Most custom pins take about three to five weeks after proof approval; rush pins take days and stock pins ship in about one working day.

FAQ

Lapel pin questions

What is the minimum order for custom lapel pins?

Custom pins start at 100 to 500 pieces depending on the type; stock pins start lower. New clients have a $1,000 minimum order; corporate account clients order any quantity.

What is the difference between soft enamel and hard enamel pins?

Soft enamel sits below the raised metal lines, giving a textured surface at a lower price. Hard enamel (cloisonné) is filled level with the metal and polished smooth, for a premium, jewelry-like finish.

How long do custom lapel pins take?

Most custom pins take about three to five weeks after proof approval. USA printed rush pins take about four working days, and stock pins ship in about one working day.

Can you match our brand colors?

Yes. Enamel colors are matched to Pantone (PMS) references, and some pins can have the metal itself dyed to your color.

Can a pin reproduce a gradient or a photo?

Enamel fills solid colors only. For gradients and photos, choose a printed pin or a UV printed enamel pin.

What backing do the pins have?

A butterfly clutch is standard on most pins. Rubber clutches, military clutches, magnets and safety pins are available on many models; each product page lists the options.

What artwork do you need?

Vector files (AI, EPS, SVG or PDF) give the best result. Send what you have; our design team prepares the pin layout and sends a free digital proof before production.
